Dietetics

Paediatric dietitians work closely with clinicians, specialist nurses and other allied health professionals, in all medical and surgical specialties across the Children's hospital, advising on therapeutic diets or nutritional support for our inpatients and outpatients. We also attend multidisciplinary clinics with specialist teams and run dietetic-led outpatient clinics daily for children and young people, accepting referrals from Children’s Hospital consultants, GPs and health visitors from GGC.

We have specialist dietetic teams working in Inherited Metabolic Disorders, Gastroenterology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Oncology, Cardiology, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Ketogenic diets, Neurology, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Food Allergy and Tube Feeding. Some of our services are regional, which enables us to support children and young people throughout Scotland.

We work with all members of the multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for our patients.

We also work closely with our special feed unit, a dedicated team who prepare daily specialist feeds for our inpatients, under stringent safety and hygiene conditions. Additionally, we also work with a diet kitchen who can provide specialist menus for our patients.

We are fortunate in our ability to train the next generation of dietitians. Therefore, we have student dietitians with us throughout the year.

We see children and young people at outpatient clinics, home visits or in school as appropriate and have close links with our colleagues working in the community. 

When you are seen by our paediatric dietetic service, we will ask you what matters to you, and following assessment will discuss how we can help you. We will normally give you advice depending on our nutritional assessment.

Some out-patient consultations are also delivered remotely by telephone and video. For more information on video consultation go to Attend Anywhere / Near Me. If attending an appointment remotely, it is beneficial for our assessment if you can have an up-to-date weight and height ready for us. 

Depending on who the referral is from and whether it meets RHC paediatric dietetic criteria, you may be seen at RHC, or a paediatric outreach clinic.

Our core hours are Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm. 

We are available for emergency work for inpatients Saturdays & Sundays, 9.00am–12.30pm
